The classifications awarded at an event depend on the number of fencers who compete, the classification of the fencers who compete and the classification of the fencers who finish in the top few places of the event.  The chart below shows how events are rated and how classifications are awarded based on those ratings.

For example, to be rated C2, an event must

  • Include at least 25 fencers and
  • Include at least 4 fencers rated D or higher and at least another 4 fencers rated E or higher and
  • Have 4 fencers rated D or higher finishing in the top 8.

A C2 event awards a C for 1st place, D for 2nd – 4th place, and E for 5th – 8th place.

Division and Regional Youth and Cadet events must be rated at least C1 in order to award classifications.
