Round 5 of the regular season was on 2 December and Pope competed at Roswell High School.

Pope won three medals again today. In the men’s event, Jett Smith won his first gold (in his first final) and Ryan Kretzmer took silver; this is the first time the Pope men took gold and silver since Luben Jelezarov and Ian Lenthart achieved that feat almost four years ago in the 2013-14 Individual Championship. In the women’s event, Lyndsay Wagner took bronze.

Of the 26 Pope fencers who competed, 9 earned points for themselves and their team by finishing in the top 16 of their event. In addition to the medal winners, they were Nyiko Maswanganye (7th – his first top 8 finish), Roman Mazzoni (9th), Christina Freitas (10th), Sara Nelson (11th), Mackenzi Mims (13th) and Dillon Loubser (14th).

Three Pope fencers set new personal bests, they were Jett Smith (1st), Nyiko Maswanganye (7th) and Andrew Prillaman (38th). Robert Russomanno equaled his personal best with a 52nd place finish. Chris Hunt qualified for the second round and finished 37th in his first tournament

Mackenzi Mims earned her Varsity Letter for fencing by earning at least 75 points.

The Pope women remain in 1st place in the women’s team standings, 23 points ahead of Johns Creek. The men moved back up to 3rd place, just 2 points behind Centennial. In the combined team points list, Pope is still in 1st place, increasing its lead over Johns Creek to 104 points.

Championship outlook

One of the requirements to compete in either the Individual or Team Championship is to have competed in at least four regular season tournaments.

Of the fencers who have competed in four tournaments, the 84 men and 84 women with the most points at the end of the regular season will qualify for the Individual Championship (if there is a tie for the 84th place, the tied fencers will all qualify). There is no way to know at this point, but any fencers who have less than about 20 points will probably need to earn more points if they want to be in that top 84.

Pope can send one men’s team and one women’s team to the Team Championship. Each team consists of four fencers (who must all have competed in at least four regular season tournaments). After the Individual Championship, Coach Eichler will select the four men and four women who he believes will best represent Pope. Just in case there is a last minute illness, he will also select a 5th man and woman to be ready to sign in on the day of the Championship if one of the other four are not able to be there.

The tournament will be in the cafeteria and a few hallways. As there is an SAT at Roswell the same day, do not enter the campus at the first entrance as you drive north from Woodstock Road. Take the second entrance (see the diagram below), park in the visitor’s lot and enter the school through the Atrium. There is overflow parking at the rear of the school.
