Round 4 of the regular season was on 4 November and Pope competed at Campbell High School.

Highlights

Pope won three medals again today. In the women’s event, Lyndsay Wagner won her fourth gold and Sara Nelson won her second bronze. In the men’s event, Jett Smith won his second bronze of the season.

Of the 21 Pope fencers who competed, 12 earned points for themselves and their team by finishing in the top 16 of their event. In addition to the medal winners, they were Christina Freitas (7th – her first top 8 finish), Dillon Loubser (8th – his first top 8 finish), Mackenzi Mims (10th), Alea Hornsby (11th), Ryan Kretzmer (12th), Samantha Hasleton (12th), Roman Mazzoni (14th) and Joey Montalvo (16th).

Two Pope fencers set new personal bests, they were Christina Freitas (7th) and Dillon Loubser (8th). Lyndsay Wagner (1st), Sara Nelson (3rd), Jett Smith (3rd) and Sophie Goodman (9th) equaled their personal bests.

Roman Mazzoni earned his Varsity Letter for fencing by earning at least 75 points.

Several Pope fencers who didn’t win medals did exceptionally well in their final bout in which they lost to an eventual medal winner:

  • Dillon scored 12 touches on Drew Walker (the gold medal winner) in the table of 8.
  • Christina scored 9 touches on Paula Thornton (the silver medal winner) in the table of 8.
  • Ryan scored 9 touches on on Gabriel Chen (the silver medal winner) in the table of 16.


The Pope women remain in 1st place in the women’s team standings, ahead of Johns Creek. The men moved down to 4th place, 10 points behind Johns Creek. In the combined team points list, Pope is still in 1st place, but only 13 points ahead of Johns Creek.

Start times

Start times will be the standard ones:

  •   7:30 – Sign in opens
  •   8:15 – Referee meeting
  •   8:30 – Men’s sign in closes
  • 10:00 – Women’s sign in closes


Fencers should arrive at least 30 minutes before sign in closes. Referees and scorekeepers should arrive in time for the referee meeting.

Directions

The address of Campbell High School is 1070 Fleming St. SE, Smyrna. According to Google Maps, it is a 30 minute drive from Pope if there is no traffic.

Please use the above address rather than the school’s postal address as there will be construction, an SAT and other events going on.

  • Fleming St. will dead end into the Campbell Stadium parking lot (see map below)
  • Park in the stadium lot, not in the Powder Springs St. or Ward St. lots.
  • The tournament entrance is off the stadium parking lot (look for signs).
  • Sign in will be in the Nash Gym (follow the signs)
  • The tournament will be held in the Nash Gym and the cafeteria.

There are three tournaments on this date with about a third of the schools in each tournament. Points will be awarded to the top 16 fencers in each event.
