The Individual Championship for the 2017-18 season was on 27 January at Northview High School.

The highest ranked 84 men and 84 women who have competed in at least four regular season tournaments qualify to compete in the Individual Championship. A fencer’s final season ranking for the season is the place he or she finishes in the Championship. The top 8 fencers in each event win medals and the top 32 earn points (which count towards seeding in the Team Championship and the first tournament of next season).

Lyndsay Wagner is this season’s Women’s Champion. She did it with exciting wins in the semi-final over Elina Moon of Chattahoochee and in the final over last season’s Champion Elaine Wen of North Springs. This is the fifth time that a Pope woman has won the Individual Championship (Katie Van Riper won a record 3 times and Ana Cristian won once).

Lyndsay earns 128 points for her win. Also earning points for Pope were Sara Nelson (17th – 16 points) and Matthew Chambers (31st – 2 points).

3 Pope fencers finished higher than they have in previous Championships. They are Lyndsay (1st), Sara (17th) and Samantha (38th). Jett equaled his previous best of 39th. 7 Pope fencers were competing in their first Individual Championship; Matthew Chambers (31st), Sophie Goodman (39th), Christina Freitas (50th), Alea Hornsby (57th), Nyiko Maswanganye (63rd), Safa Bamatraf (73rd) and Joey Montalvo (76th).

Congratulations to all the Pope fencers who competed today. This was an extremely competitive tournament and even those who didn’t finish near the top should be proud to be among those who qualified.

Lyndsay has broken into the exclusive 500 points club. She is one of only 9 fencers in the history of the league to earn 500 points in a season and her 528 points have her tied with Pope’s Erin Maurer for 4th place (Pope accounts for 7 of the 9 and all of the top 5). Lyndsay also has a career total of 1,000 points which puts her 19th in the history of the league.

On the men’s side, Ryan’s 305 points this season is the 13th highest in Pope history and his career 454 points is the also 13th in Pope history.

Moving to the team standings, The Pope women remain in first place, ahead of Johns Creek, Chattahoochee and Northview. The men are in 3rd place, behind Alpharetta and Centennial, but ahead of Lassiter.
