Last weekend was not just the GHSFL Team Championship. In the NCAA it was also the Midwestern Conference Fencing Championship. Pope Fencing Alumni Katie Van Riper was there representing Northwestern University.
In the Women’s Épée Individual Championship, Katie finished 12th and the NWU squad took 6 of the top 12 places.
NWU won the Women’s Team Championship, placing first in the Women’s Épée and Women’s Sabre events and third in Women’s Foil.
In NCAA fencing, bouts won and lost seem to the the primary statistic for individuals (apart from championship places). Katie’s record in her freshman year was 31-3. Before the weekend’s championship, her record in her sophomore year was 30-8. Katie’s career winning percentage (again, not counting the championship) is 0.847, the highest on the NWU women’s épée squad.
