Our annual parent meeting is at 6 PM following practice on Wednesday (21 August). We need at least one parent of each new and returning fencer to attend and to bring the fencer’s medical insurance card. There will be pizza for fencers and parents. Fencers are welcome to stay for the meeting and Ms. Newell, our armorer, will run an épée repair clinic for new fencers and any returning fencers who want to learn how to take care of their weapons.
Forms, forms, forms
Yes, it’s a pain, but we must collect various forms for each fencer. Some are required by the league, some by Pope, some for insurance purposes, but there is a reason for each one. At the parent meeting, we will give you a copy of each form that you haven’t already turned in, please complete the forms and hand them to us before you leave.
At the parent meeting we will make a copy of each fencer’s medical insurance card. This is in case we need to seek medical treatment for a fencer in an emergency and we are unable to contact the parents.
Dues for returning fencers should be paid at the parent meeting. New fencers may pay at the parent meeting or may attend a few practices before deciding whether to join. Dues are $185 (for the school year) for the first fencer in a family and $125 for each additional fencer in the same family. You can make checks out to Pope Greyhound Fencing Club or PGFC and send them in to practice.
Socks, T-Shirts, Patches and Sheaths
Everyone who has paid their dues will get a pair of uniform socks to wear at tournaments, and a club t-shirt. New fencers also get a Pope patch to wear on their fencing jacket and a PVC tube to protect their epee.
We will be handing out socks at the parent meeting to fencers who have paid their dues. New fencers please note that, for reasons now lost in the mists of time, the gRey sock goes on your Left foot and the bLue sock goes on your Right foot.
We will be ordering the team t-shirts need to be ordered. There is a space on the registration form for the fencer’s t-shirt size. You can order additional t-shirts for fencers and parent is you like, the price will be announced soon..
The Pope patch is to be sewn on the non-weapon sleeve of your fencing jacket (that is, for right handers it goes on the left sleeve). It should be a few inches below the shoulder and well above the elbow. Returning fencers who have a new jacket should take the patch from the old jacket. If you never received a patch, let us know and we will give you one. Otherwise, if you would like a new one, you can buy one for $5 (but we will need to order it).
Uniforms and Equipment for New Fencers
New fencers who have not already bought their equipment should be thinking about that now (see our Fencing Equipment List). Those who have bought it should bring it to practice. If you need to store it somewhere during the school day, Mr Gray has kindly said we can store fencing bags in the Orchestra Room. Please stack your bags neatly in the area he has set aside for them.
First tournament on 7 September
Our first tournament is in 3 weeks on 7 September at Roswell High School. Only fencers who have previously competed in a tournament are eligible to fence in this tournament, but we would like all the new fencers to attend so that they can see what happens at a tournament and so they can cheer for their teammates.
If you haven’t been to a tournament before, please go to Tournaments 101 to learn about them. Returning fencers and families, please look for the new fencers and families and show them the ropes.
