Katie and Christi competed in the North American Cup in St. Louis this past weekend. North American Cups are a series of national level tournaments held about once a month during the season.
On Friday, Christi competed in the Division II Women’s Epee (Division II is for fencers aged 13 through adult who are rated C or lower). She won two pool bouts and lost her DE bout 14-15, finishing 76th. Great job Christi!
Katie also competed in Division II Women’s Epee. She won a bronze medal, losing in the semi-final to the eventual gold medal winner. Her third place finish also earned her a “B” rating.
On Saturday, Katie competed in Division I Women’s Epee. Division I is open to fencers aged 13 through adult who are rated C or higher. There are only 335 fencers in the country who are qualified to enter this event, and 152 of them showed up, including these ladies ….
… all four members of the US Women’s Epee Team who won the Bronze Medal at the Olympics. Katie won one DE bout and missed advancing to DEs by three places, finishing 117th.
On Monday Katie competed in Cadet Women’s Epee. Cadet is for fencers aged under 17 with any rating. She won five of her six pool bouts (including beating three nationally ranked fencers) to be seeded 14th going in to DEs. Katie advanced to the table of 32 where she beat the 9th ranked Cadet fencer in the country to make it to the top 16. She finished 11th, no medal this time, but in this event the top 32 fencers earn points and a national ranking. The rankings will be published in a few days, but I estimate that Katie will debut at about 33rd place in the National Cadet Women’s Epee points list.
We are very proud of you Katie!
