With several new fencers getting ready for their first tournament, the Tournaments 101 section has a new page, Your first tournament, that what fencers need to know about how tournaments work.
Coach covers all this information at practice, but it wouldn’t hurt to review it before your first tournament.
Both men and women took home two medals from the September tournament. Katie V R won gold and Christi N won bronze in the women’s event. Luben J and Jake W both won bronze in the men’s event.
Of the 26 Pope fencers at the tournament, 10 earned points and a league ranking by finishing in the top 16 in their event. In addition to the medal winners they were: Ian L (5th), Aditya K (8th) and Nick S (13th) for the men; Kayla K (9th – her first league ranking), Anna DM (13th – her first league ranking) and Paige Y (15th) for the women. The fencers with points will almost certainly qualify for the Individual Championship on 23 February as long as they compete in at least three regular season tournaments.
Katie V R became the first (but surely not the last) Pope fencer to qualify for a Letter by earning at least 56 points in a season. Her first place finish was worth 64 points. Way to go Katie!
Five Pope fencers finished higher than they ever have before; Ian L (5th), Kayla K (9th), Anna DM (13th), Hannah T (23rd) and Chase G (34th). Katie V R (1st), Christi N (3rd) and Luben J (3rd) matched the highest finish of their careers.
The men’s and women’s teams are both in 2nd place behind Northview. The combined teams are also in 2nd place.
What a great way to start the season! Congratulations to all the Pope fencers.

Our next tournament will be on 6 October at John’s Creek High School. This will be the first tournament that new fencers can compete in (as long as Coach Eichler believes they are ready for a tournament).
Our first league tournament of the season is on Saturday at Roswell High School.
This tournament is restricted to fencers who competed in a tournament last season. The Pope roster is listed below. If you are on the roster but not able to fence on Saturday, or if you are not on the roster but fenced in tournaments last season and would like to fence on Saturday, please let us know by replying to the e-mail you received on Thursday.
