This weekend four Pope fencers competed in the Georgia qualifying tournament for the Summer National Championships: Chloe, Jake, Katie V R, and Mike.
The tournament included qualifying events for three different National Championships:
- Y14 for fencers who were 14 or younger at the end of 2010
- Division III for fencers of any age who have a USFA rating of D and under
- Division II for fencers of any age who have a USFA rating of C and under
On Saturday, Chloe took silver in the women’s D & under event, and qualified for the Division III National Championship. Katie, in her first USFA tournament, finished 11th out of 14 in the same event. In the men’s D & under event, Jake finished 7th and Mike 8th out of 19. Both lost close matches in the table of eight, which if they had won would have meant a medal and a trip to Nationals.
On Sunday, Chloe took bronze in the women’s C & under event. As only three fencers from that event were to qualify, Chloe had to fence the other bronze medalist (Caitlin Stanton) for third place, and Chloe won to qualify for the Division II National Championship. Katie finished 11th in the same event. In the men’s C & under event, Jake finished 12th out of 20 after losing to Dave Williams who went on to take Gold.
Katie was one of only three fencers in the Women’s Y14 event. As three is the minimum number of qualifiers, she qualifies for the Y14 Championship at Summer Nationals.
Congratulations Chloe, Katie, Jake and Mike on a great performance!
