The dates and place are set for Summer Camp. It will be June 6 – 9 from 9 AM to 3 PM each day at Hightower Trail Middle School (the construction at Pope means we can’t hold the camp there). This will be a trip down memory lane for those of you who went to Hightower, the camp will be in the 6th grade and 8th grade commons.
The camp is definitely open to all Pope students (including graduating seniors and rising 9th graders) and all students at Dodgen and Hightower (including rising 6th graders), so get the word out! It’s possible that the camp might be opened up to other schools as well. More details will be posted later.
This weekend four Pope fencers competed in the Georgia qualifying tournament for the Summer National Championships: Chloe, Jake, Katie V R, and Mike.
The tournament included qualifying events for three different National Championships:
Y14 for fencers who were 14 or younger at the end of 2010
Division III for fencers of any age who have a USFA rating of D and under
Division II for fencers of any age who have a USFA rating of C and under
On Saturday, Chloe took silver in the women’s D & under event, and qualified for the Division III National Championship. Katie, in her first USFA tournament, finished 11th out of 14 in the same event. In the men’s D & under event, Jake finished 7th and Mike 8th out of 19. Both lost close matches in the table of eight, which if they had won would have meant a medal and a trip to Nationals.
On Sunday, Chloe took bronze in the women’s C & under event. As only three fencers from that event were to qualify, Chloe had to fence the other bronze medalist (Caitlin Stanton) for third place, and Chloe won to qualify for the Division II National Championship. Katie finished 11th in the same event. In the men’s C & under event, Jake finished 12th out of 20 after losing to Dave Williams who went on to take Gold.
Katie was one of only three fencers in the Women’s Y14 event. As three is the minimum number of qualifiers, she qualifies for the Y14 Championship at Summer Nationals.
Congratulations Chloe, Katie, Jake and Mike on a great performance!
Coach Vail wants everyone to be aware of a unique opportunity for 15-19 year olds this summer. The World Scholar-Athlete Games and World Youth Peace Summit will be held from June 26 to July 4 in the Hartford, Connecticut area.
Students qualify to attend based on honor roll status at school and proficiency in one of the sports or arts that will be part of the games (fencing is one of them). The cost is $750 for tuition and nine days of dormitory accommodation and meals.
