Fencers and parents should have received an e-mail with the latest Pope results and standings. You can find the league results and standings by clicking on GHSFL in the menu above and choosing the 2010-11 season.
One month after the first ever all-Pope final, the Pope men made it two in a row, with Harrison taking gold (his first gold ever) and Nick Sh taking silver (his first medal ever). Mike made it the first Pope 1-2-3 finish by taking bronze (his first medal ever). In the women’s event, Chloe and Abbey both took bronze (this was Abbey’s first medal and came in just her fourth tournament ever). The total of five medals is the most in the history of the team.
Ten of the 27 Pope fencers at the tournament earned points by finishing in the top 12 of their event. In addition to the medal winners they were Gil, Nick H and Jake for the men, and Alex B and Christi (earning her first league ranking ever) for the women.
Seven Pope fencers had the best finish of their career; Harrison, Nick Sh, Mike, Ian and Luben for the men; Abbey and Christi for the women. Also Bonnie advanced to DEs in her first ever tournament.
Pope earned 368 points in the tournament, the most in the history of the team. The league is not tracking points earned by teams this year; but if they were, Pope would currently be ranked 3rd (up from 5th last month).
The Individual Championship will be held on 5 March at Chattahoochee. The league has not yet announced who has qualified for the championship, but I know that all the ranked Pope fencers have qualified. They are Jake, Gill, Harrison, Nick H, Nick Sh, Mike, Stefan, Matt S and Aditya for the men, and Chloe, Alex B, Leah, Alex R, Paige, Abbey, Katey C and Christi for the women. The total of 17 qualifiers is (you guessed it) the highest in the history of the team.
There will be a team championship for the first time this year. For each sex, the four schools earning the most points in the Individual Championship (by finishing in the top 12 in that tournament) will send a team of three fencers plus one alternate to the Team Championship on 12 March.
