GHSFL Tournament Schedule

I know that we are not finished with this school year yet, but the League had its spring meeting today and announced proposed dates for next season’s tournaments.  Tournament schedules are always subject to change, especially this far out, but here is the list so that you can see when we might be fencing.  I have noted in bold type some potential conflicts with test dates and Cobb school breaks.

  • 22 September. Experienced fencers only.
  • 6 October.  SAT test date.
  • 27 October.  ACT test date.  Pope will host, Coach Eichler has booked the main gym.
  • 17 November.  Start of Thanksgiving Break.
  • 15 December.
  • 12 January
  • 2 February
  • 23 February.  Individual Championship.  Hosted by Northview.
  • 2 March.  Team Championship.  Hosted by Pope.

As in this past season, there are seven regular season dates with the schools being split between two tournaments on each date (which schools go to which tournament is still to be decided).  The regular season is followed by an Individual Championship and a Team Championship.  The tournaments are a little more spread out than they were this season, with the Individual Championship being at the end instead of the beginning of February, and the Team Championship being at the beginning of March.

Holiday Team Tournament

Alpharetta is offering to host a team tournament during the winter break (probably 5 January – a few days before Pope opens after the break).  This is just for fun; it has no effect on league standings.  Each school can send as many teams (three or four fencers of the same sex) as it likes so anyone who wants to compete can do so.  There will be an entry fee of $20 per team.  Fencers from schools with less than three fencers can be added to another school’s team.

Summer Camp

I hope all fencers will consider joining us for the Pope Fencing Summer Camp 23 – 27 July in the Pope Cafeteria.  The camp is open to all Pope fencers as well as any students who will be in 5th through 12th grade next year at any school.  Information about the camp and how to sign up is on this website, click on “Camp” on the menu at the top of the page.

Pope fencers shine at the Georgia Games

Luben J, Ian L, Christi N and Katie V R all competed in the Georgia Games this weekend.  The tournament included the regional qualifier for the Division 1A National Championships this summer. Division 1A events are open to fencers of all ratings, and as this was a national qualifier, there there were A and B rated fencers from all over the country competing.

In the Division 1A Women’s Epee event, Katie came 5th earning a place in the Division 1A National Championship (she had already qualified for Division II).  As the highest placed fencer in the event from Georgia, Katie is the Women’s Division 1A Epee State Champion! Christi finished 13th in the same event and was the 6th highest placed Georgia fencer.

In the C and Under Senior Mixed Epee event, Luben came 3rd, winning a bronze medal and his “D” rating. As the highest placed Georgia fencer in the event, Luben is the C and Under Epee State Champion! Katie finished 6th in the same event (third in the state) and Ian finished 12th (6th in the state).

In the Junior (Under 20) Mixed Epee event, Katie finished 11th (5th in the state) and Luben finished 13th (7th in the state).

Ian also competed in Foil and Saber, finishing 11th (second in the state) in the C and Under Senior Mixed Saber event, 18th (5th in the state) in Junior Mixed Saber, and 22nd (7th in the state) in C & Under Mixed Foil.

Congratulations to all four of you!
