2012-13 Season Accomplishments

What an incredible season it has been.  I’m so proud of you all, I still smile every time I think about it.

At the pool party I gave Coach Eichler a binder with some reminders of the season.  If you are interested, you can see them by clicking on the following links.

Physical exams for next season

The Pope administration has decided that beginning next school year, all members of the Fencing Club must have a physical exam and submit the same medical form as athletes in other sports. This will need to be done before the first practice in August.

The following information was recently posted on the Pope High School Facebook page:

Spring Physical Day- Sat April 27th

Physical Day April 27, 2013 at Resurgens Orthopedics on Chastain Road. No cost-FREE. Physical will cover athletes through the summer and the entire 2013-14 school year. Pope’s time slot is 11am-12pm but students can go anytime between 9-12.

Students will need to get a new blank gray physical form from Coach Mathews’ office before attending (do not print off the county website – use our form). The front will need to be completed before the doctor can complete the physical exam. Mrs.Vorobal will be on hand to check and collect physicals that day. GHSA rules require all athletes to get a new physical for any summer activities as well as prior to trying out for any sport. Did I mention physicals are FREE on 4/27/13!

You can have the physical done by your own doctor, but that is likely to cost you something. The article above is about a way to get the physical done at no cost. I highly recommend that (unless you are competing in the qualifiers for Summer Nationals on that day) you take advantage of this opportunity to take care of this requirement. Note that 27 April is the day of the pool party, so just let’s just make that day all about fencing.

Note that wherever you go for the physical, you must first get a copy of the physical exam form from Coach Mathews’ office and complete the first part before seeing the doctor.  If you hand the form to Mrs Vorobel at the doctor’s office, please e-mail Statsman (or the Webmaster on our Contact Us page) so that we can keep track of who has submitted their form.

Team Tournament Results

Congratulations to the Liusers of the 3rd Annual Pope Team Tournament.

  • Nick S (Captain)
  • Mandy W
  • Anthony S
  • Luan J

A total of 31 fencers competed in 8 teams, each captained by a member of one of the League Championship winning Pope Teams.  For full results and a copy of the bracket, click here.

Don’t for get, we have one practice left (3 April).  We plan a salute to our graduating seniors, and two or three one-touch tournaments for fun.

Summer Camps

This year we are holding two summer camps.

  1. June 3 – 6. This camp is for rising 4th through 9th grade students.  We are looking for members of this year’s club to assist Coach at the camp. Volunteers will earn service hours towards their graduation Service Cord.  Please contact Coach or Statsman if you would like to volunteer.
  2. July 15 – 18. This camp is for rising 6th through 12th grade students.  Coach wants all Pope fencers to enroll for this camp if they will be in town.

Both camps will be in the Pope cafeteria.  Please go to the Summer Camps page for more information and to register for camp.

Pope team tournament

We have just three practices left this season.  We will be using the next two practices for the annual end of season Pope team tournament.  This is everyone’s chance to fence a team match (just like the ones at the Team Championship last Saturday).

The eight members of Pope’s championship-winning teams will each captain a team in this tournament. We plan on having eight teams and will fence for all eight places, that means each team will fence three matches; probably one match on 13 March and two on 27 March (there is no practice on 20 March because of graduation testing).

We hope as many fencers as possible will be there. If you miss the first day, we can add you to one of the teams on the second day.

Here are the last four Wednesdays before Spring Break:

  • 13 March. Start of Pope Team Tournament
  • 20 March. No practice due to High School Graduation Tests
  • 27 March. End of Pope Team Tournament
  • 3 April. Last practice of the season.

Yellow Jacket Open

For those of you who are interested in more tournaments, there is a large one at Georgia Tech on Saturday (9 March).  This is a USA Fencing sanctioned tournament and you will need to join USA Fencing in order to compete, see our USA Fencing page for details, or ask Coach or Statsman about it at practice.  There is also a tournament fee of $20 for one event and $15 for each additional event.

There are two epee events

  • Mixed Epee, for all fencers born in 1999 or earlier. Check-in closes at 9 AM.
  • Division II Mixed Epee, for all fencers rated C or under (you would know if you are rated higher than C) born in 1999 or earlier. Check-in closes at 2 PM.

Both events have more than 70 fencers signed up and depending on who shows up and where they finish, the Mixed epee event may award ratings of E or higher to fencers finishing in the top 32.

Pope wins! Pope wins!

Well that was fun.

It was a perfect day for Pope.  The women won their semi-final against Johns Creek 45-41 and then beat Alpharetta 45-32 in the final.  The men won their semi-final 42-29 and then beat Northview 45-37 in the final.

The final places were:
Men Women
1 Pope 1 Pope
2 Northview 2 Alpharetta
3 Johns Creek 3 Northview
4 Chattahoochee 4 Johns Creek
Pope’s Champion teams were:
Men’s Team Women’s Team
Jake Wachtel (Captain) Katie Van Riper (Captain)
Luben Jelezarov Christi Nakajima

Congratulations not only to those eight, but to the whole team whose effort over the season got us to the championship.  Thanks to all those who helped with setup and with running the tournament and the concessions stand.

Team trophies

Championship news

Congratulations to Katie for repeating as GHSFL women’s champion, to Christi and Jake for their silver medals and to Luben and Ian for their 5th and 6th place medals.  While we are at it, congratulations to all 17 Pope fencers who took part in the Individual Championship and earned their league ranking.  More details of the results are in the Individual Championship page in the Calendar section of the website.

The Team Championship is on Saturday (2 March) in the Pope cafeteria. The Pope women are seeded first and the Pope men are seeded second. More details are in the Team Championship page in the calendar section of the website.

Congratulations to our nationally ranked fencers: Katie and Luben

Katie and Luben competed in fencing’s Junior Olympics over the weekend. Junior Olympics is the national championship for the Cadet (under 17) and Junior (under 20) age groups.

Luben finished 27th in Cadet Men’s Epee, the best finish of any Georgia fencer. He also finished 140th in Junior Men’s Epee.

Katie finished 60th in Cadet Women’s Epee, the second best finish of any Georgia fencer.

National rankings are based on points earned over the whole season in all national and some international tournaments.  Katie is currently ranked 44th in the U.S. in the Cadet age group and 98th in the Junior age group.  Luben is currently ranked 53rd in the U.S. in the Cadet age group.

We are all proud of you!

The national championships for the Senior (13 and older) and Youth (14 and under) age groups will be in July in Columbus.  The Georgia qualifying events for those championships will be held this spring.
